Connection between collision and impact episode
A study directed by a Texas-based research organization indicates that a particular collision within the main asteroid belt may relate to a phase of intense bombardment across the inner solar system. According to the analysis, the catastrophic disruption of the Eulalia parent body could have triggered a shower of fragments that struck the terrestrial planets around 800 million years in the past.
Possible consequences for Earth and neighboring worlds
The authors consider whether this flux of impactors produced detectable geological and biological effects on Earth. Such an episode would be relevant to understanding how surfaces of the inner planets evolved during the Precambrian era.

- Focus on the main belt between Mars and Jupiter
- Released as a preprint on the arXiv server
The findings are presently available as a preprint and have not yet passed through formal peer review. Nevertheless, they provide a framework for explaining periodic impact signatures recorded in rocks and crater records of the rocky planets.
