New lunar lander unveiled
U.S. company Astrobotic announced the Griffin‑1, a newly designed lunar lander scheduled for launch later this year. The vehicle is intended to serve as the first step in NASA’s initiative to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon.
Technical specifications and mission objectives
Griffin‑1 features a modular payload bay capable of carrying scientific instruments and technology demonstrators. The landing site is targeted at a polar region to enable long‑duration experiments and to gather data supporting future crewed missions.
Collaboration with NASA
The lander is being developed under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which contracts private firms to deliver payloads to the lunar surface. Astrobotic’s contribution aims to build part of the infrastructure required for recurring lunar operations.
Future outlook
Following launch, Griffin‑1 will undergo an initial testing phase before deploying its payloads. Astrobotic intends to use the mission’s results to design subsequent lander variants with greater capacity and expanded mission capabilities.
