Scientists speculate that a past gravitational encounter with Saturn may have altered the object's orbit, sending it on a trajectory that brings it closer to the Sun. The increased solar heating could then trigger the observed cometary activity, potentially setting the centaur on a path to become a full-fledged comet over time.
