Composite X-ray image of a pulsar
On 9 July 2026, a combined view of the surroundings of a pulsar located in the Lighthouse nebula was made public. The observed object is a neutron star possessing a very strong magnetic field and rotating at an extraordinarily high rate.
The visualization brings together measurements from two space-based X-ray facilities operated by the U.S. space agency. Data acquired by the Chandra X-ray Observatory appear in purple, whereas recordings from the IXPE mission are shown in blue. IXPE, short for Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, is designed to study the polarization of X-ray light.
Value of merged observations
By overlaying different X-ray bands, scientists can map structures and emission zones around the compact remnant with greater clarity. The image illustrates how complementary instruments contribute to a coherent picture of high-energy processes within a pulsar wind nebula.
