Although no near‑Earth objects currently pose a credible impact threat, planetary‑defence research continues worldwide. A Chinese research team has recently presented two nuclear‑based concepts that could be employed to alter an asteroid's trajectory in an emergency scenario.
Proposed Scenarios
The first concept involves detonating a nuclear device directly inside the asteroid, causing surface ablation and generating a thrust that nudges the object's orbit away from a collision course.
The second concept proposes a near‑miss detonation, where the warhead explodes close to the asteroid without contact. The resulting shock wave and thermal radiation would fracture or erode the surface, also producing a modest orbital change.
Assessment of Methods
Both scenarios were examined using simulation models that accounted for variables such as asteroid size, composition, and approach angle. Findings suggest that an internal detonation offers higher precision but carries a greater risk of creating uncontrolled fragments. A close‑proximity explosion is less precise yet may reduce the chance of large debris reaching Earth.
Future Work
The team stresses the need for additional testing, particularly in space, to validate the feasibility of either approach. Ongoing international cooperation and the enhancement of early‑warning systems remain essential for timely response should a genuine threat emerge.
