Mission under defense development program
A commercial launch provider has placed 21 spacecraft manufactured by York Space Systems into orbit. The operation was conducted on behalf of the Space Development Agency and supports the construction of a networked satellite infrastructure for military use.
- 21 satellites from York Space Systems were deployed
- The vehicles form part of the Tranche 1 Transport Layer
- Half of the planned constellation is now in space
According to the responsible agency, the mission has positioned the first half of the intended Tranche 1 Transport Layer in orbit. The full architecture is designed as a multi-layered system intended to relay data between different military components.
Officials view the current status as a significant step toward the gradual deployment of a resilient communications framework. Additional launches are expected to complete the tranche and fulfill the planned number of units in orbit.
