Unique Imaging of Mamers Valles
The European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter has returned high‑resolution images of a section of Mamers Valles, one of Mars' most striking canyon networks. The valley is threaded by a multitude of small, tornado‑like vortices.
Dust Devils: Short‑Lived Whirlwinds
The features correspond to the well‑known dust devils that arise from localized temperature gradients, lofting surface dust into the thin Martian atmosphere. The frames reveal dozens of such transient vortices extending for several kilometres before dissipating within minutes.
Scientific Relevance
Dust devils affect surface conditions and atmospheric dynamics, offering insight into local weather, surface composition, and erosion processes. Their presence can also alter the visibility of surface features for subsequent missions.
Observation Details
The images were taken with Mars Express' High‑Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). The sequences capture dust devils at various stages, from formation to decay, allowing researchers to trace their motion and structure with fine spatial detail.
Future Work
Ongoing analysis aims to quantify the frequency of these vortices in Mamers Valles and assess their role in Mars' broader climate system. The data will be combined with observations from other orbiters to build a comprehensive picture of Martian atmospheric processes.
