Close flyby of Torifune
On July 5 the Japanese asteroid mission Hayabusa2 reduced its distance to the asteroid Torifune to roughly 62 million miles, enabling high‑resolution imaging.
Characteristics of the double‑lobed object
The images clearly reveal the asteroid’s distinctive shape, consisting of two pear‑shaped lobes that are in contact. The resolution allows scientists to examine surface features on both sections in unprecedented detail.
Scientific relevance
These observations provide insight into the formation and gravitational binding of binary‑type asteroids, informing models of small‑body evolution. The data also aid the planning of future missions that may target similar objects for landing or sample return.
Imaging technicalities
Hayabusa2 employed its high‑resolution camera to photograph the target from about 100 million kilometres away, adjusting exposure settings to capture the faint reflected light from the rocky surface.
Future observations
The spacecraft remains operational and will continue to monitor Torifune as well as other near‑Earth asteroids, expanding our knowledge of these primitive solar‑system bodies.
