Hubble spots an apparently quiet spiral galaxy with hidden turmoil
The Hubble Space Telescope, a joint project of NASA and ESA, has captured a new image of NGC 4698, a spiral galaxy that at first glance appears tranquil.
Closer inspection, however, reveals a turbulent interior, indicating that despite its calm appearance the galaxy undergoes dynamic processes.
NGC 4698 lies about 55 million light‑years from Earth in the constellation Virgo.
It is a member of the Virgo Cluster, the nearest large gathering of galaxies bound together by mutual gravity.
The cluster contains more than a thousand galaxies, making it one of the densest structures near our Milky Way.
Observing NGC 4698 helps improve our understanding of how galaxies evolve in crowded environments and what internal motions can exist even when the outward look is peaceful.
