A Novel Strategy for Finding Space Resources
Before humans can extract materials from the Moon, asteroids or Mars, essential questions must be answered: what substances are present, in what quantities, and where exactly they occur. A research group headed by Pablo Sobron of the SETI Institute is currently studying a technique designed to address these questions without requiring a landing site, drilling operations or the return of samples to Earth.
The proposed approach relies on high‑resolution remote sensing from orbital platforms. By combining multispectral imaging, laser spectroscopy and radar measurements, the chemical makeup of surface and subsurface layers can be analysed. Evaluating reflection spectra reveals the presence of metals, water isotopes and other valuable compounds.
Artificial intelligence also plays a role, processing the large data volumes to identify patterns that indicate resource concentrations. The aim is to produce maps highlighting promising mining sites with high confidence before costly landing missions are undertaken.
The researchers emphasise that the technology is still under development. Laboratory tests and trials using existing Earth‑observation satellites will validate the fundamentals. Subsequent flights to near‑Earth objects are planned to test the method under actual space conditions.
If successful, the approach could substantially lower the costs and risks of future space mining ventures. It would also lay the groundwork for a sustainable utilisation of extraterrestrial resources by directing missions only to the most promising targets.
