New simulation program slated for 2027
NASA has opened recruitment for a year‑long research project that will take place at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The mission is scheduled to commence no earlier than August 2027 and will run for twelve months.
Purpose of the simulation
Participants will live and work in a sealed environment that reproduces the psychological and physiological stresses expected on crewed missions to the Moon or Mars. The data collected aim to improve safety and efficiency for future deep‑space expeditions.
Eligibility criteria
The agency seeks healthy adult volunteers willing to spend a full year in isolation while supporting scientific experiments. Selection will be based on medical, psychological and security assessments.
Anticipated outcomes
The study will examine the impact of prolonged confinement on team dynamics, cognitive performance and physical health. It will also test technologies intended for use in upcoming lunar and Martian habitats.
