Two Companies Selected for Lunar Vehicle Development
On 26 May, NASA announced the selection of two contractors to produce iterative versions of their existing Lunar Terrain Vehicles (LTV). The contract aims to have the rovers ready for deployment before the Artemis 4 crew arrives on the lunar surface.
Focus on Faster, Cost‑Effective Deployment
The chosen firms will refine their current designs to shorten integration and launch timelines. By employing modular architectures and streamlined testing, the agencies expect to lower the per‑unit cost while maintaining the required performance for surface operations.
Role Within the Artemis Program
The upgraded rovers are slated for inclusion in the Artemis 4 mission, currently targeted for 2028. They will assist astronauts with exploration tasks, sample collection, and the construction of early lunar infrastructure.
Next Steps and Certification
NASA stresses close collaboration between the contractors and the Artemis team to tailor the vehicles to the Moon’s harsh environment. Additional ground tests and flight‑demonstration missions are planned for the next year before the rovers receive final flight certification.
