Robot designed to prevent Swift failure
On Tuesday, NASA initiated a mission that will send a small robotic service unit to the Swift space telescope. The objective is to perform in‑orbit repairs on the more than 20‑year‑old observatory and thereby extend its operational lifespan.
Since its launch in 2004, Swift has been monitoring gamma‑ray bursts and other high‑energy astrophysical phenomena. The gradual degradation of its components now threatens a premature loss of capability.
The service robot, a modified version of NASA’s on‑orbit servicing platform, will be launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. After reaching the correct orbit, it will rendezvous with Swift, conduct diagnostics, and replace faulty parts.

The operation is overseen by NASA’s Space Operations Directorate in partnership with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Officials note that a successful demonstration could pave the way for servicing other aging satellites.
Should the repair succeed, Swift could continue providing valuable observations of cosmic events for several more years, reducing the need for an immediate replacement.
