Delivery and initial checks
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, slated to follow Hubble and James Webb, arrived at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. After being shipped from the manufacturing facility in California, the observatory was moved into Hangar 4 of Launch Complex 39A on 23 June.
Pre‑launch servicing
Following arrival, the telescope entered a comprehensive service and verification program. Engineers are inspecting structural integrity, performing optical alignment, and loading the latest software updates. Clean‑room technicians are completing the final assembly of scientific instruments and testing the cryogenic cooling system required for the infrared detectors.
Collaboration and schedule
NASA personnel from astronomy, aerospace engineering and mission operations are working alongside partners at Ball Aerospace and the Space Telescope Science Institute. The launch is targeted for 2027, with the exact window contingent on the outcome of the ongoing tests.
Scientific impact
Featuring a 0.28‑square‑degree field of view and resolution surpassing Hubble, the Roman telescope will probe dark energy, exoplanet demographics and galaxy formation. The servicing activities in Florida represent the final stage before the observatory is rolled out to the launch pad.
