Rare aerial perspective
A team of NASA flight photographers recently captured images from an F‑18 fighter jet flying over the state of Washington. The photographs provide a view of NASA missions that is accessible to only a handful of observers.
Technical setup
Photographer Jim Ross, based at the Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, employed a specially equipped camera system that delivers high‑resolution stills during flight. The shots were taken from roughly 15,000 feet, allowing a clear view of test sites and related infrastructure.
Public relevance
By releasing the images, the agency offers the public a direct glimpse into its research and development activities. The photographs not only document technical tests but also illustrate the collaboration between military assets and civilian space programs.
Future missions
The F‑18 is regularly used for reconnaissance and observation flights that gather data for various NASA projects. Following the Washington sortie, the team plans similar missions at other locations to further highlight NASA’s work.
