Distinctive Landscape Feature
Stretching across northern and central Nebraska, the Sandhills comprise a sprawling field of gently rolling dunes interspersed with grasslands. The combination of sand, vegetation and wetlands creates a unique ecosystem that supports rich biodiversity and underpins local ranching practices.
Extent and Geological Origin
Encompassing approximately 30,000 km², the Sandhills occupy about 25 % of Nebraska’s total land area. The dunes originated around ten million years ago when ancient rivers deposited sediments into a prehistoric inland sea. As the water receded, the sands were left behind and subsequently shaped by wind and water action.
Environmental and Economic Importance
The porous sand substrate limits intensive crop farming, so the region is predominantly used for cattle grazing. The expansive grass cover provides habitat for numerous bird species, including the threatened Carolina chickadee. Moreover, the Sandhills serve as a major groundwater reservoir that supplies drinking water to surrounding agricultural communities.
Conservation and Research
Significant portions of the Sandhills are designated as protected areas to preserve their fragile ecosystems. Researchers study the interplay of sand, flora, and hydrology to develop sustainable land‑management practices and to deepen understanding of this singular landscape.
