Revisiting a historic nebula
The planetary nebula NGC 6563, first identified roughly two centuries ago, has become the subject of a collaborative study by astronomers from Turkey and Mexico. Observations were carried out with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope and the Manchester Echelle Spectrograph (MES) at the 2.1‑m telescope of the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional.
Reassessing morphology and kinematics
Data reveal that the nebula’s distinctive ear‑like lobes exhibit more intricate structures than previously recognized. High‑resolution spectroscopy enabled the mapping of velocity fields, providing details on expansion speeds and interactions with the surrounding interstellar medium.
Implications for planetary nebula evolution
Published on 15 June in a special issue of the journal *Galaxies*, the findings suggest an earlier onset and a longer duration of the shaping processes. This may require revisions to current models of planetary nebula development, especially concerning binary central stars and asymmetric outflows.
Future work
The team stresses the need for complementary infrared and radio observations to fully reconstruct the three‑dimensional geometry. The synergy between optical integral‑field spectroscopy and high‑resolution echelle spectroscopy has proven particularly powerful for such studies.
