Discovery of a Previously Unknown Galaxy
An international group of astronomers reports the detection of a massive barred spiral galaxy, catalogued as M1149‑BSG‑z5. The observations were carried out with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), whose high‑resolution infrared capabilities enable the study of distant cosmic structures.
The galaxy lies at a considerable redshift, making its identification noteworthy. JWST’s infrared instruments revealed the hallmark features of a barred spiral – a central bar and winding arms – despite the object's great distance.
The findings were posted on the arXiv preprint server on 23 June. The submitted paper details the image analysis and discusses the implications for models of galaxy formation in the early universe.
This newly found system provides evidence that complex structures such as bars were already in place shortly after the Big Bang, supporting theories that predict rapid assembly of massive galaxies.
Future observations are planned to refine measurements of M1149‑BSG‑z5’s physical properties, including its star‑formation rate and dark‑matter distribution.
