Discovery and Context
Using archival survey data, astronomers have found four new white dwarfs located roughly 65 light years away. Despite extensive previous studies of the sky, these objects had escaped notice.
The reason for their concealment lies in their stellar partners: each white dwarf is in a tight binary with a much brighter red dwarf. The red dwarf’s glare overwhelms the faint emission of the white dwarf, making it difficult to detect in standard observations.
Furthermore, the characteristics of these systems suggest that the two stars once shared a common envelope. This earlier phase of shared evolution can tighten the orbit and explains the present close configuration.
