Comprehensive study of an open cluster
A group of astronomers from Indonesia has performed an in‑depth analysis of the open star cluster NGC 6134, located in the constellation Norma. The findings were released as a preprint on arXiv on 23 June and provide new information on the cluster’s age and spatial structure.
Age and central concentration
Measurements indicate that NGC 6134 is approximately 1.38 billion years old. Despite its advanced age, the cluster retains a well‑defined core where stellar density is highest.
Tidal tail and diffuse halo
In addition to the core, researchers identified a pronounced tidal tail, suggesting past gravitational interactions with the Milky Way’s tidal field. Surrounding the core is a diffuse halo that spreads member stars over several parsecs.
Implications for cluster dynamics
The coexistence of core, tail and halo makes NGC 6134 an important case for studying the long‑term dynamical evolution of open clusters. The results support models describing gradual dissolution of such systems under galactic tidal forces.
Future work
Planned infrared observations aim to characterise the stellar population of the halo more precisely and to search for possible age spreads among the cluster’s stars.
