Perseverance Reaches Marathon Milestone on Mars
On June 13, 2026, an image from NASA showed a tiny green speck on the Martian surface, identifying the Perseverance rover. The following day the vehicle completed the official marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers.
The achievement came after five years and four months of driving, precisely on sol 1,890 of the mission. This sets a new record for the fastest time to cover that distance on the Red Planet.
The previous record holder, NASA's Opportunity rover, required eleven years and two months to reach the same milestone. The comparison highlights the improved mobility and extended operational lifespan of the current Mars mission.
Perseverance continues its scientific work, collecting rock samples and searching for signs of ancient life while also testing new driving techniques to improve energy efficiency and prolong its stay on Mars.
