A striking atmospheric phenomenon
During the warm months, thin layers of ice form high above the Earth, creating noctilucent clouds (NLC). Located roughly 80‑85 km up in the mesosphere, these clouds catch sunlight that still skims the horizon after sunset, producing a faint, luminous glow.
Formation and required conditions
The clouds consist of microscopic ice crystals that nucleate on tiny particles such as meteoritic dust or trace chemicals from human activity. Extremely low temperatures around –120 °C and very dry air are essential, conditions most commonly met in polar regions during the summer, which makes June through August the prime viewing window.
Where and how to observe them
Clear, dark skies away from city lights give the best chance of spotting NLC. Observers should look northward about 30‑60 degrees above the horizon roughly 30 minutes after sunset. In Central Europe, the northern states provide the most reliable sightings, while in North America the Great Lakes region and high‑latitude areas are favorable.

Monitoring noctilucent clouds helps researchers track changes in the upper atmosphere. Variations in their frequency and brightness may reflect shifts in atmospheric composition, including rising greenhouse‑gas concentrations.
