Overview of the Roman Space Telescope
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is NASA's next major space observatory, designed to operate in the infrared. With a wide field of view and high sensitivity, it is built to scan large areas of the sky quickly and detect transient phenomena.
One of its key science goals is to observe tidal disruption events, where a black hole tears apart a star and accretes its material. These events produce distinctive light curves that are especially detectable in infrared wavelengths.
Because it can monitor millions of galaxies simultaneously, the telescope should be able to catch short‑term brightness changes that signal a star being ripped apart. This will let astronomers better measure how often such events occur and what they look like, shedding light on the demographics of black holes in different galaxies.
Launch is scheduled for August 30. After a commissioning and calibration phase, the observatory will begin science operations and provide data that complement those from facilities such as Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope.
