First LSST Camera Image from the Rubin Observatory
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has published its inaugural image taken with the LSST Camera. The picture displays a dense concentration of hundreds of thousands of distant galaxies located within and around the COSMOS field. This release coincides with the publication of a catalog that scientists can use for further research.
The COSMOS field is a well‑studied region of the sky that has already been observed by many telescopes. The LSST Camera’s deep and wide view now provides researchers with a substantially larger sample of galaxies than previously available.
The accompanying catalog lists positions, brightnesses and other basic properties of the detected objects. Researchers can employ these data to investigate the large‑scale structure of the universe and to trace galaxy evolution across cosmic time.
