Entry into Science Orbit
Following a successful launch and a series of orbital maneuvers, the ESA‑led SMILE (Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) mission has attained its planned scientific orbit around Earth. The satellite now follows an elliptical trajectory optimized for studying the coupling between the solar wind and the planet's magnetosphere.
Mission Objectives
SMILE aims to deliver the first simultaneous imaging of the magnetosphere, magnetic field, and ionosphere. By combining soft X‑ray and ultraviolet observations, the mission will investigate processes such as magnetospheric compression, tail reconnection, and energy transfer into the ionosphere.
