Joint timeline set for 2028
Space companies SSC Space and Firefly have aligned their plans to achieve the first orbital launch from the Swedish Esrange spaceport by 2028. Both firms cite the completion of key infrastructure and the resolution of regulatory requirements as essential milestones.
Infrastructure and licensing
The expansion of launch facilities at Esrange, located near Kiruna in northern Sweden, is slated for completion over the next few years. Work includes building a new launch pad, installing guidance and safety systems, and connecting to the national power grid. Simultaneously, the companies are coordinating with Swedish authorities to secure the necessary orbital launch licenses.
Technical partnership
Firefly is expected to provide its Alpha launch vehicle, while SSC Space will supply satellites and payloads. Both parties stress that the collaboration not only bolsters the European market but also opens new opportunities for customers worldwide.
Future prospects
Should the schedule hold, Esrange could become the first high‑latitude spaceport to conduct regular orbital missions. The initiative enjoys support from the Swedish Space Agency and may lay the groundwork for additional Scandinavian launch capabilities.
