Interdisciplinary research on Maine's coast
At the Passamaquoddy reservation known as Sipayik, located in Downeast Maine along Passamaquoddy Bay, students have launched a collaborative project that blends modern NASA satellite observations with knowledge passed down through generations of the Passamaquoddy people.
Rising threat of coastal erosion
The shoreline of the reservation has been receding at an increasing rate in recent years. Land that holds historic and cultural significance for the community is being lost due to higher wave energy and shifting currents.
Methodology: science meets tradition
Participants analyze NASA satellite imagery and measurement data to quantify current erosion rates. At the same time, they record oral histories, elder observations, and traditional navigation practices to capture long‑term changes.
Anticipated outcomes and benefits
Integrating the two knowledge systems aims to produce more accurate predictive models that reflect both physical processes and cultural impacts. The findings are expected to aid the local community in adaptation planning and serve as a model for inclusive research worldwide.
