Mission Overview and Flight Path
In July 2024 the balloon‑borne observatory Sunrise III launched from the northernmost tip of Sweden and drifted across several days toward Canada’s Northwest Territories.
The flight lasted about six and a half hours of daylight each day, totalling roughly viereinhalb days of uninterrupted solar viewing.
Data Volume and Quality
Instruments recorded more than 200 terabytes of raw data, providing an unprecedented level of detail.
This wealth of information captures rapid variations and fine‑scale structures in the solar atmosphere.
Scientific Significance
The observations target a layer roughly two thousand kilometres thick beneath the visible photosphere.
Over several hours the instrument tracked magnetic field fluctuations, plasma flows and explosive energy releases without gaps.
Such long, continuous sequences are difficult to obtain from the ground because atmospheric interference and the day‑night cycle limit observing windows.
Future Prospects
The dataset will improve models of the lower solar atmosphere and inform the design of upcoming solar missions.
Researchers worldwide will be able to access the data for comparative studies and theoretical work.
