Overview of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time
The Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile has commenced its flagship program, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Over ten years it will repeatedly image the southern sky, detecting any change in brightness or position of celestial objects.
Each night the telescope will produce roughly 800 exposures, which will be combined into a cinematic time‑lapse of the universe. This movie aims to capture supernovae, variable stars, and moving bodies such as asteroids.
Technical Specifications
At the core of the facility lies a 3.2‑gigapixel digital camera, delivering the widest field of view ever achieved on a large telescope. Paired with an 8.4‑meter mirror, it can image patches of each frame an area almost 40 times the size of the full moon.
Scientific Objectives
A primary goal is to probe dark energy and dark matter, which together constitute about 95 % of the cosmos. By measuring the shapes and distances of billions of galaxies, researchers hope to refine models of cosmic expansion.
The survey will also catalogue Near‑Earth Objects to improve early warning of potential impacts and to refine their orbital trajectories.
All data will be released publicly, enabling the global astronomical community to pursue novel discoveries.
