Return to the Orion capsule
On Wednesday the four astronauts who completed the inaugural crewed lunar flyby in December 2023 gathered again around their Orion spacecraft. The meeting took place as part of preparations for the next stage of NASA’s Artemis program.
Reflections on the record‑breaking mission
The crew – Commander Reid, Commander Phillips, Pilot Christensen and Mission Specialist Kimbrough – used the occasion to inspect the capsule’s systems and share personal observations from the flight. Their journey lasted roughly 24 days and took them farther from Earth than any previous human mission.
Technical assessment
NASA engineers and the Orion development team accompanied the astronauts to evaluate the condition of the thermal protection, life‑support, and communications equipment. Findings will feed into the planning of Artemis III, which aims for a lunar surface landing.
Looking ahead
This reunion represents a milestone toward establishing a sustainable lunar presence. Data gathered and crew feedback will be applied to improve safety and efficiency for upcoming missions.
Public response
The event was streamed live on NASA’s webcast, attracting a large audience. Observers highlighted the mission’s significance for the global space community.
