Maintenance mission aboard the ISS
NASA astronaut Jessica Meir carried out a series of hardware upgrades on the Cold Atom Lab (CAL) on May 8, 2026. While onboard the Russian segment of the International Space Station, she inspected optical fibers and replaced key components to sustain the experiment’s performance.
What the Cold Atom Lab does
The CAL, roughly the size of a mini‑fridge, cools atoms to temperatures below –459 °F (–273.15 °C), approaching absolute zero. This environment allows researchers to study quantum phenomena that are difficult to achieve on Earth. Although the experiment runs in microgravity, its control and data analysis are conducted from ground stations.
Why the upgrades matter
The replaced parts focus on optical data transmission and precise temperature regulation. The new hardware is expected to increase measurement accuracy and extend the instrument’s operational lifespan. CAL is a cornerstone of NASA’s broader effort to develop quantum technologies for future missions, including navigation and sensing.
Future prospects
With the upgrades completed, CAL will resume a schedule of experiments involving ultracold atoms. Findings from these studies could advance fundamental physics and support applications in timekeeping, materials science, and quantum communications.
