Discovery represents milestone in exoplanet research
Researchers have confirmed for the first time the presence of an atmosphere around a rocky planet that resembles Earth in size and nature and orbits within the habitable zone of its host star. The observation is regarded as a significant advance in the effort to identify Earth-like environments outside the solar system.

The body circles a foreign sun at a distance where liquid water on a surface would in principle be possible. Such conditions are considered a key requirement for life as we know it. Until now, comparable objects lacked clear evidence of an enclosing gaseous layer.
With the new confirmation, the case strengthens that worlds of Earth-like composition and temperature can occur beyond our planetary system. The measurements provide the most compelling indications so far that such planets genuinely exist and could in theory offer habitable conditions.
Detailed study of the atmospheric makeup will now become a priority for astronomy, in order to determine whether the gas envelope contains substances that might point to biological activity.
