Hybrid approach to refurbish Launch Complex 36
Following the New Glenn anomaly that caused extensive damage to Launch Complex 36 (LC‑36) at the Kennedy Space Center, Blue Origin is implementing an accelerated recovery program. The company announced a hybrid plan that merges immediate repair actions with longer‑term infrastructure upgrades.
Initially, damaged structures such as the launch pad, flame‑deflection system, and associated utility networks will be repaired using specialized vehicles and modular components. Simultaneously, engineering teams will investigate the root causes of the failure to mitigate future risks.
On the longer horizon, Blue Origin intends to modernise the complex by installing reusable elements, including a reinforced flame‑deflection system, automated fueling and payload handling equipment, and enhanced safety measures designed to support heavy‑lift vehicles like New Glenn on a permanent basis.
The hybrid strategy aims to cut the downtime of the launch site dramatically. While conventional refurbishment can take several months, the company projects that limited test launches could resume within six to eight weeks, with full operational capability restored in roughly three months.
Blue Origin is working closely with the Kennedy Space Center and relevant U.S. authorities to meet all safety regulations. Progress updates will be released regularly to maintain transparency about the restoration efforts.
