Botswana Signs the Artemis Accords
The Republic of Botswana becomes the latest African nation to endorse the Artemis Accords, a set of principles developed by the United Nations and the United States to guide peaceful and responsible space activities.
The Accords cover transparency, debris mitigation, and collaborative scientific missions. Botswana intends to apply these guidelines to bolster its emerging space ambitions while contributing to global efforts.
This move follows a series of recent signatories, reflecting a growing coalition of countries seeking coordinated lunar and deep‑space exploration. Officials from Botswana's space agency highlighted that the Accords will serve as a framework for future projects, including satellite launches and potential participation in lunar missions.
Although Botswana does not yet operate a crewed space program, it is planning to expand its Earth‑observation and communications satellite capabilities. Joining the Accords may facilitate access to international partners and accelerate technology sharing.
