Located roughly 4.8 billion kilometers from Earth, the object designated Centaur 450P/LONEOS is slowly drifting inward through the solar system. Though classified as a centaur—a type of icy body that typically orbits between Jupiter and Neptune—it has recently displayed signs of activity more commonly seen in comets.
Observations reveal a faint coma of gas and dust surrounding the body, indicating that subsurface ices are beginning to sublimate. This outgassing is characteristic of comets as they approach the Sun and receive greater solar heating, whereas most centaurs remain inactive unless their orbits are significantly altered.
Researchers suggest that a previous close encounter with Saturn may have perturbed the centaur's orbit, sending it on a path that brings it closer to the Sun. The resulting increase in solar energy could be driving the observed emission, potentially initiating a transformation from centaur to comet over astronomical timescales.
Ongoing tracking will assess whether the activity strengthens or wanes. Continued outgassing could make 450P/LONEOS a valuable natural laboratory for studying the dynamical and physical processes that convert centaurs into active comets in the outer reaches of the planetary system.
