China’s Shijian-31 Uses Unusual Orbit to Sweep the GEO Belt
In June China launched a classified satellite designated Shijian-31. Little information about the mission has been released due to its confidential nature.
Reports indicate the spacecraft is traveling in a specially chosen orbit that allows it to systematically traverse the entire geostationary belt. This path differs from the fixed slots occupied by typical communications and weather satellites.
By sweeping across the GEO region, Shijian-31 can repeatedly observe different longitudes, providing a broad observational window. Analysts suggest the capability could be used to monitor satellite activity or track space debris.
The exact altitude, inclination and orbital period have not been disclosed. Experts believe the orbit is likely slightly eccentric or inclined, enabling periodic approaches to the GEO ring without remaining inside it.
China’s space program has increasingly employed novel orbital maneuvers to gain strategic advantages. Shijian-31 fits this trend, demonstrating how classified missions can test new operational concepts.
