Arrival after extended Pursuit
China's Tianwen-2 probe has completed a pursuit spanning approximately one billion kilometers in space to reach a small asteroid. The spacecraft reduced its distance to the object to about twenty kilometers and initiated close-range scientific observations.
Research Objectives of the Mission
The detailed study now under way may help resolve an open question regarding the nature of Earth's quiet companion. Researchers aim to determine whether the body is an ordinary asteroid or a fragment originating from the Moon, potentially representing a long-lost piece of Earth's natural satellite.
- Approach to within roughly 20 kilometers of the target
- Travel distance estimated at one billion kilometers
- Commencement of dedicated scientific investigation at the site
The endeavor reflects China's expanding role in planetary science. Data collected by the probe is expected to shed light on the composition and possible origin of the asteroid.
