Planning cycles and target area
Two planning cycles were executed for Curiosity during sols 4934 to 4940. The first cycle took place on a Monday while the rover was positioned in a unit that appeared light‑toned in orbital imagery and smooth from previous rover traverses.
Exploration of polygonal features
Upon arrival, Curiosity began examining a surface marked by a network of polygonal structures. Such patterns are typical of permafrost‑derived terrain, formed by thermal contraction, and can reveal clues about Mars’ ancient climate.
Scientific measurements
The onboard science suite captured high‑resolution photographs, performed dust chemistry analyses, and recorded temperature variations. These data aim to characterize the composition and physical properties of the soil.
Relevance to Mars science
Findings from this segment enhance the understanding of Gale Crater’s geological history and contribute to the search for past habitable environments. The results will be processed over the next weeks and compared with earlier observations from other crater locations.
Future plans
After completing work in the polygonal field, Curiosity will proceed to a neighboring bright terrain unit to address additional geological questions.
