On Friday, August 14, 2026, Allison Dries‑Padilla, a missions operations specialist at Malin Space Science Systems, reported that Curiosity’s activities for sols 4982 through 4987 marked a return to the mission’s regular timeline after a short deviation.
Prior to this, the rover spent several sols examining a feature described as an “erosional surface,” collecting images and compositional data to better understand the geological processes that shaped the terrain.
With that investigation complete, Curiosity resumed its planned ascent of Mount Sharp, the central peak inside Gale Crater, continuing its long‑term study of sedimentary layers that record Mars’ environmental history.
The return to the regular schedule allows the science team to carry out the intended measurements across the mountain’s strata without interruption. Consequently, the mission’s primary goal of assessing ancient habitable conditions on Mars remains on track.
