Observation of a nearby star-forming region
Equipped with a 570-megapixel sensor, the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) has produced a recent view of the Corona Australis Molecular Cloud. This area ranks among the star-forming zones closest to Earth. Although it receives less scientific attention than comparable structures, the available data show that it is equally compelling.
Comparison with established star-forming regions
Corona Australis is examined less thoroughly than the Orion Molecular Cloud or the cloud in the constellation Ophiuchus. The newly released DECam frame demonstrates, however, that the southern object is just as remarkable in form and detail. Observers noted a visual resemblance between the image and paintings by Vincent van Gogh.
- DECam features a 570-megapixel imaging sensor
- Corona Australis is among the nearest stellar nurseries
- Orion and Ophiuchus are more widely studied than Corona Australis
The picture highlights how modern large-format survey cameras can document even less prominent sky regions with high fidelity. Continued observation may improve understanding of the physical processes driving star birth in Corona Australis.
