Cosmic cloud recorded in vivid tones
An instrument designed to study dark energy has returned a richly colored view of a southern star-forming region. The Corona Australis Molecular Cloud was imaged by the Dark Energy Camera, and the luminous structures within the cloud visually recall the well-known painting The Starry Night by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh.
The region lies in the southern sky and is recognized as an active site where new stars are born. Dust and gas in the molecular cloud reflect and block light from nearby young stars, producing the swirling and bright patterns visible in the recent images.
Observation method and scientific value
The Dark Energy Camera was originally built for wide-area sky surveys aimed at investigating dark energy. Its sensitivity and resolution enable researchers to record fine detail in faint interstellar formations. Such data help improve understanding of the physical conditions that accompany stellar birth.
- Corona Australis is a southern molecular cloud near the constellation Corona Australis
- The Dark Energy Camera operates at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile
- The image shows parallels with van Gogh's The Starry Night
