Impact of a SpaceX Rocket on the Moon
Early this morning a SpaceX‑launched rocket hit the Moon’s surface at high velocity. Initial estimates place the impact speed at roughly seven times the speed of sound, corresponding to a large amount of kinetic energy.
The exact time of the event has not been released publicly, but observers say it occurred during the early morning hours in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The spent stage or spacecraft responsible for the impact is, according to SpaceX, no longer in active service.
Since the impact, several lunar orbiters have turned their instruments toward the presumed impact site to acquire first images and data. The goal is to measure the size and shape of the newly formed crater and to detect any changes in the surrounding regolith.
Scientists hope the images will reveal details about the lunar material’s composition and provide insight into high‑speed impacts in an airless environment.
