Extended search for methane
The Trace Gas Orbiter, part of ESA’s ExoMars programme, has been monitoring the Martian atmosphere continuously since its insertion in 2016. Its primary objective is to identify trace amounts of methane, a gas that could indicate active geological or possible biological processes.
Instruments and detection limits
The spacecraft carries ultra‑sensitive spectrometers capable of measuring gas concentrations down to parts per trillion. These instruments are tuned specifically to detect volatile organic compounds, with methane being the principal target.
Current findings
Analysis of thousands of measurements to date has not revealed any statistically significant methane signals. Earlier reports of brief methane spikes have not been corroborated by the orbiter’s data.
Future outlook
The mission is planned to continue operations until at least 2028, providing a long‑term record of atmospheric variability. Researchers note that the persistent non‑detection of methane constrains models of Mars’ habitability, although the possibility of rare, localized releases cannot be entirely ruled out.
