Joint view of the Galactic centre
The European Space Agency’s Euclid mission, with contributions from NASA, has recently obtained an image of the innermost part of the Milky Way. The field overlaps with the area that NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will observe after its planned launch later this summer.
Synergy between Euclid and Roman
Because the two surveys share the same sky region, astronomers can begin combining Euclid’s wide‑field optical data with the high‑resolution infrared observations that Roman will provide, even before the latter becomes operational. This early data set offers a valuable reference for the deeper, more precise measurements expected from Roman.
Scientific benefits
Merging Euclid’s broad‑area survey with Roman’s detailed imaging is expected to enhance studies of star formation, dark‑matter distribution, and the structure of the Galactic bulge. Researchers can already test models and pre‑select targets for the more focused Roman observations.
