Observation at 48 Light Years Distance
An international group of astronomers has for the first time established the presence of an atmosphere surrounding a rocky exoplanet that orbits within the habitable zone of its host star. The object is situated approximately 48 light years from Earth and is considered a possible candidate for conditions allowing liquid water.
The measurement was enabled by a rare alignment in which the planet passed in front of its star, allowing a narrow band of light to be analysed. Spectral examination of that light indicated the existence of a surrounding gas layer. Prior to the observation, a mathematical model had already predicted such an atmosphere.
Relevance for Exoplanet Science
The detection marks a milestone because it provides the first concrete evidence of an atmosphere on a terrestrial planet beyond the Solar System in a life-friendly orbit. The technique of using favourable planetary alignments to reveal atmospheres may in future be applied systematically to locate comparable bodies.
