Background
Cosmic voids occupy the majority of the Universe’s volume, yet they are not completely barren. Isolated galaxies and, on rare occasions, small aggregations can be found within these vast under‑dense regions.
Methodology
Researchers employed data from the CAVITY survey and applied a friends‑of‑friends algorithm to identify clusters of nearby galaxies. Galaxies within a predefined linking length were grouped together as potential associations.
Findings
The study shows that the overwhelming majority of galaxies residing in voids have no close companions, effectively living alone. The few identified groups are modest in size, loosely bound, and show no clear dependence on the surrounding emptiness.
Interpretation
These results raise the question of which physical mechanisms enable group formation in such extreme environments. While most galaxies lack sufficient gravitational attraction to bind, the occasional groups may arise from local density fluctuations or past interactions.
Future Work
Additional observations and cosmological simulations are planned to determine why some galaxies in the most empty parts of the cosmos find companions while others remain isolated. Understanding this could illuminate the role of dark matter and the evolution of large‑scale structure.
