Messier 3 – a Jewel of the Milky Way
The Hubble Space Telescope, operated by NASA, has captured a detailed photograph of the globular cluster Messier 3 (M 3). This cluster ranks among the most massive and densely populated stellar assemblies in the Milky Way’s halo.
Messier 3 comprises several hundred thousand stars bound together by gravity. Its roughly spherical shape creates a distinctive, round appearance. The new image displays a wide range of stellar types, from red giants to blue main‑sequence stars.
Hubble’s observations allow astronomers to refine measurements of the cluster’s physical characteristics, such as its formation history and internal dynamics. The telescope’s resolution resolves individual stars down to about 24th magnitude.
Located roughly 34,000 light‑years from Earth, Messier 3 is faintly visible to the naked eye as a subtle smudge. Beyond its visual appeal, the image provides essential data for ongoing research into stellar evolution and the structure of our galaxy.
