Italian startup ORiS announced that it has secured five million euros (approximately 5.7 million US dollars) in a recent financing round. The funds are earmarked to support the ongoing development of a laser‑driven wireless power‑beaming system intended for use with satellites.
ORiS’s approach uses focused laser beams to transmit energy from a ground‑based or airborne transmitter to a receiver aboard a satellite. The receiver converts the laser light into electrical power, which can then be used to run onboard systems.
By delivering power without cables or large solar arrays, the technology could reduce the mass and complexity of spacecraft, enable longer missions, and allow for more demanding payloads. Potential users include Earth‑observation, communications and navigation satellites that require a steady power supply.
With the new investment, ORiS intends to mature the technology, build prototypes, conduct ground‑based tests and prepare for possible in‑orbit demonstrations. The round highlights the growing interest of the space industry in novel energy solutions for orbital operations.
