Supermassive black holes, with masses millions to billions of times that of the Sun, play a key role in shaping their host galaxies. How they manage to capture such vast amounts of matter over cosmic timescales had remained an open question. The Webb observatory now supplies evidence that addresses this gap.
The results rely on the telescope’s infrared sensitivity, which penetrates dense clouds of dust that block visible light. This capability exposes regions previously hidden from ground-based and older space instruments. Follow-up studies are planned to verify and measure the identified feeding mechanisms in greater detail.
