Four‑year milestone
On December 25, 2026 the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reaches four years since its launch. NASA chose the occasion to showcase a remarkable image of a distant galaxy.
Centaurus A – relic of a cosmic crash
The target is the elliptical galaxy Centaurus A, located roughly 13 million light‑years away in the constellation Centaurus. About two billion years ago a massive dwarf galaxy merged with a larger elliptical host, producing the galaxy’s distinctive warped appearance.
Image reveals new details
Thanks to JWST’s high resolution and wide wavelength coverage, the new picture displays structures invisible to earlier observatories. Hot gas clouds from active star‑forming regions and a prominent jet ejecting material from the galaxy’s central supermassive black hole are clearly visible.
Scientific relevance
The observation provides valuable data for studying how galaxy mergers influence star formation and the growth of supermassive black holes. Researchers can now probe the morphological changes triggered by such collisions and assess their role in cosmic evolution.
